“I’ll Sleep When I’m Dead” by Ged Palmer.

I went to a Candy Chang lecture…

And my mind was effectively blown-

Candy Chang was absolutely brilliant. She is by far one of my favorite designers, particularly because she is an innovative social designer who gets things done. Her work is intriguing; it effectively engages the viewer and makes them think. I am especially drawn to the empathetic nature of her work- her references to morbidity are well thought out and moving. So much of design is this methodical, mechanical process that is merely a distraction from things that actually matter. It is more than inspiring to see a relatable process and product that meaningfully engages the community.

As I told Candy after the lecture, (totally shocked to be meeting my design hero) her work has inspired me to be a more conscientious thinker and maker. Every small thing counts for something, and the thought and care put into her larger than life projects exemplifies that. Her Before I Die project is so incredibly powerful in its message and universality. She effectively created something that could be translated across the globe and still mean the same thing, no matter what nation or country it was seen in. I think work like Candy’s can be appreciated for its big picture approach and search for truth and meaning in the universe.

I aspire to create projects as effective and motivating as Candy’s. Social design is a crucial tool to create meaningful change in any community, and the way that Candy’s work has expanded internationally is commendable. I admire her passion and amiability towards other designers- she actually wants to connect with other people on a very meaningful social level. I think all design should be more conscious, because without purposeful action, aren’t we all just simply reacting?
